Temecula Valley Wineries Story: Where Old World Meets New Vines

Temecula is one of the younger California American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), but it has quickly made its mark. The pioneering winemakers saw potential in the rolling hills, warm sunshine and cool coastal breezes.

In 1968, Audrey and Vincenzo Cilurzo retired from Hollywood and bought 100 acres in Temecula. They planted and sold wine grapes to start, eventually opening a winery in 1978 and the rest is history. Temecula’s wine scene flourished in the following decades, and it officially became an AVA in 1984.

Since then, Temecula has grown into one of the largest wine-growing areas in California. It is an easy-going wine destination known for its variety of grapes, unique terroir and welcoming wine community.

The Terroir: Sunshine And Coastal Breezes

Temecula Valley wineries are in the Temecula Valley AVA, a high-desert wine region about 30 miles north of San Diego. The Mediterranean climate is the key to its winemaking success. The weather is hot during the day to ensure optimal ripening of the grapes and cool at night to preserve the acidity and create balanced, delicious wines.

Thanks to its location and elevation (about 1,400 feet above sea level), Temecula Valley offers ideal conditions for growing various grapes. The soils here range from sandy loam to decomposed granite.

Today, about 2,500 acres are under vine. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, Muscat Blanc, Chardonnay and Vermentino are the top grape varieties planted.

Sip Sustainably: Wine That’s Exceptional and Good for the Earth

Temecula Valley wineries don’t just make great wine; they do it with the earth in mind. Sustainability is critical for Temecula winemakers who know that taking care of today’s land ensures the region’s wine future.

Today, they employ practices like composting, hawk and owl nesting boxes, natural pest management in the vineyard and use of recycled packaging materials in the winery.

Five Temecula Wineries To Visit

Most Temecula Valley wineries sell their wines directly to consumers (in their tasting rooms and wine clubs), so the best way to try them is to visit them in real life. Here are five of the must-visit wineries in the Temecula Valley:

Bella Vista Winery
Bella Vista Winery has a long history in Temecula. It is the site of the former Cilurzo winery and one of the region’s first vineyards. Today, the winery is owned by Imre Cziraki, and produces an array of wines, including sparkling wine, Viognier and Merlot.

Chapin Family Vineyards
Owned by San Diego native Steve Chapin, the winery began in 2002 when five acres of varietals of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot were planted. This family-owned winery can be experienced in various ways, including a visit to the tasting room, a cheese and wine pairing experience or a vineyard tour that includes a tasting session overlooking the vineyards.

Cougar Vineyard & Winery
Cougar is the place to be if you’re all about Italian grapes. The winery farms 17 acres, and produces 100% Estate Italian varietals. With lesser-known grapes like Ciliegiolo and Falanghina, Cougar lets you explore beyond the usual suspects in a beautiful setting.

Cook A Taste Of Temecula

Try pairing a California Pinot Noir or Grenache with Sweet Potato Crostini topped with Brie and Pomegranate — an easy, elegant bite that brings a taste of California wine country home.

Sweet Potato Crostini with Brie and Pomegranate

This stunning appetizer is incredibly easy to make! Forget toasted bread – we're using roasted sweet potato slices as the base for these colorful crostini. Simply top them with creamy brie cheese, a sprinkle of pomegranate seeds, and a drizzle of hot honey (or regular honey if you prefer). Serve these sweet and savory bites warm from the oven for an unforgettable appetizer. Even at room temperature, they're delicious – the brie softens and the pomegranate seeds add a delightful crunch. Pair them with a California Pinot Noir or California Grenache for the perfect pairing.

Sweet Potato Crostini with Brie and Pomegranate

Ingredients

  • 2 medium (700g)  sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced into ¼-inch thick rounds

  • ¾ cup (124g)  pomegranate arils
  • 2 tablespoons hot honey (or regular honey)

Directions

  • Heat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place sweet potato slices on the baking sheet and drizzle with the olive oil. Season generously with salt and pepper and toss to coat. Arrange in a single layer.
  • Roast on the top shelf of the oven until golden brown and tender, 20-30 minutes.
  • Remove to a serving platter and top with a slice of brie and a sprinkle of pomegranate arils. Drizzle honey over the top. Remove the leaves from the rosemary and thyme and distribute evenly over the crostini. Season again with salt and pepper and serve.
