Grab your wine glass, and let’s explore Temecula, from its Mediterranean climate to its dedication to sustainability.
Temecula is one of the younger California American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), but it has quickly made its mark. The pioneering winemakers saw potential in the rolling hills, warm sunshine and cool coastal breezes.
In 1968, Audrey and Vincenzo Cilurzo retired from Hollywood and bought 100 acres in Temecula. They planted and sold wine grapes to start, eventually opening a winery in 1978 and the rest is history. Temecula’s wine scene flourished in the following decades, and it officially became an AVA in 1984.
Since then, Temecula has grown into one of the largest wine-growing areas in California. It is an easy-going wine destination known for its variety of grapes, unique terroir and welcoming wine community.
Temecula Valley wineries are in the Temecula Valley AVA, a high-desert wine region about 30 miles north of San Diego. The Mediterranean climate is the key to its winemaking success. The weather is hot during the day to ensure optimal ripening of the grapes and cool at night to preserve the acidity and create balanced, delicious wines.
Thanks to its location and elevation (about 1,400 feet above sea level), Temecula Valley offers ideal conditions for growing various grapes. The soils here range from sandy loam to decomposed granite.
Today, about 2,500 acres are under vine. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, Muscat Blanc, Chardonnay and Vermentino are the top grape varieties planted.
Temecula has all the winemaking excellence California is known for but with a laid back attitude. Think vineyard picnics, live music in the tasting rooms and friendly winemakers happy to share their passion for the craft.
And with nearly 50 wineries in Temecula, you’re spoiled for choice when trying something new. Wine tasting in Temecula is like heading on a wine world tour — all without leaving SoCal.
Temecula Valley wineries don’t just make great wine; they do it with the earth in mind. Sustainability is critical for Temecula winemakers who know that taking care of today’s land ensures the region’s wine future.
Baily Vineyard & Winery
Phil and Carol Baily started this family-owned winery more than 30 years ago. A pioneer in the state for sustainability, Baily is a Certified California Sustainable Winery & Vineyard. Its wines are made with environmentally-friendly practices and with a particular emphasis on water conservation.
Ponte Winery
Since purchasing the land in 1984, the folks at Ponte Winery have had the land’s best interest in mind. In 2011, Ponte became Temecula’s first Certified California Sustainable Vineyard and Winery. Today, they employ practices like composting, hawk and owl nesting boxes, natural pest management in the vineyard and use of recycled packaging materials in the winery.
Most Temecula Valley wineries sell their wines directly to consumers (in their tasting rooms and wine clubs), so the best way to try them is to visit them in real life. Here are five of the must-visit wineries in the Temecula Valley:
