The Heritage of Santa Cruz Mountains Wineries

The Santa Cruz Mountains’ winemaking legacy began in the early 20th century when pioneers like Paul Masson planted the region’s first vineyards using cuttings from Burgundy. This early foundation set the stage for a tradition of excellence.

In 1981, the Santa Cruz Mountains became one of the first AVAs to be defined by its mountain topography, with boundaries following the fog line along the ridges.

The Santa Cruz Mountains are recognized for producing wines of exceptional quality. Martin Ray, often considered the father of modern California winemaking, established Mount Eden Vineyards in the 1950s, setting new standards for the region. Today, the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA is home to over 200 vineyards, united by their passion for crafting wines that reflect the unique terroir of this mountainous region.

Where the Mountains Meet the Sea

The Santa Cruz Mountains AVA spans nearly half a million acres, stretching from San Francisco in the north to Watsonville in the south. This diverse region is characterized by its proximity to the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, creating a calm, maritime climate ideal for growing premium wine grapes.

The Santa Cruz Mountains vineyards are planted at elevations ranging from 400 to 2,600 feet above sea level, with many situated above the fog line. This elevation and the ocean’s cooling influence result in a long growing season that allows grapes to develop complex flavors while maintaining acidity.

Sustainability Spotlight: Water Efficiency

drip irrigation

Water efficiency is a key area of focus for California’s sustainable wine industry, and Santa Cruz Mountains is no exception.

Many wineries use advanced irrigation systems and monitoring tools, such as weather stations, neutron probes and pressure bombs, to determine their vineyards’ water needs.

Most vineyards in California use drip irrigation, which gives growers precise control over when, where and how much water to apply. These practices conserve water and contribute to the production of high-quality grapes. This approach to water management aligns perfectly with the Santa Cruz Mountains’ commitment to making wines that truly express their terroir.

Here are a few of the many wineries focused on sustainability:

Bargetto Winery
As one of the oldest wineries in the region, Bargetto has been crafting wines since 1933. Its Regan Estate Vineyard, certified sustainable by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, produces outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Cooper-Garrod Vineyards
Cooper-Garrod Vineyards at Garrod Farms has been family-owned since 1893. Initially producing dried prunes and apricots, the family began winemaking in the 1970s. All its vineyards are now CCOF-certified organic, and their sustainability initiatives include solar panels, water-efficient practices, composting and integrated pest management. These efforts were recognized in 2024 when Cooper-Garrod received the California Green Medal Award in the Community category.

Ridge Vineyards
Perched high above Silicon Valley, Ridge Vineyards is one of the most renowned producers in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Known for its iconic Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon, Ridge also produces excellent Zinfandel and Chardonnay. The winery’s commitment to sustainable practices includes using solar power and organic farming methods.

What to Cook with California Wines

While the Santa Cruz Mountains are best known for their Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, the region also produces excellent aromatic white wines that pair beautifully with this Zucchini Sabzi. Look for a lean California Chardonnay or Viognier to complement the dish’s spices and enhance its flavors. A mineral-driven Chardonnay’s will compliment the curry’s richness, while a Viognier’s aromatic profile and fuller body will stand up to the dish’s spices.

Zucchini and Cauliflower Sabzi

This Indian side dish comes together quickly and is perfect for summer parties or easy weeknight dinners. If some of these spices are new to you (Hello asafoetida!) embrace the adventure. The complexity of the spices adds excitement to fresh zucchini and cauliflower, which soak up the vibrant flavors. Serve as a side dish with grilled chicken, salmon, or pork chops and of course a refreshing glass of California Chenin Blanc or California Viognier.
