From The Mission Era to Renowned Wineries

San Luis Obispo County has always been defined by its agricultural roots. Historically, the region was known for ranching, with cattle grazing across its hillsides.

Over time, the fertile soils and Mediterranean climate paved the way for other agricultural products, including nuts and fruit. Today, the county’s principal crops are strawberries, winegrapes, broccoli and avocados.

Wine entered the picture in the late 1700s when Spanish missionaries planted the region’s first grapevines at Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. These early plantings were primarily for sacramental wine but laid the foundation for a vibrant wine culture.

The historic Benito Dusi Ranch was planted with Zinfandel in the 1920s and is one of the only remaining vineyards from the Prohibition era. By the 1970s, winemakers saw the potential of the region’s diverse terroir and founded commercial wineries like Eberle Winery. San Luis Obispo County is home to 16 AVAs, including the iconic Paso Robles AVA, which boasts 11 nested sub-AVAs. These sub-AVAs, such as Willow Creek District and Adelaida District, highlight the diversity of soils, climates and wine styles within the Paso Robles region alone.

The AVAs outside Paso Robles include Arroyo Grande, Edna Valley, Santa Maria Valley (primarily within Santa Barbara County) and the area’s newest addition, the San Luis Obispo Coast AVA.

The main grapes in San Luis Obispo County are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Syrah, Zinfandel and Pinot Noir.

1 pound (500g) rainbow carrots, peeled and julienned
1 cup (182g) green grapes, halved

1 tablespoon honey

2 teaspoons ground coriander
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
¾ cup (113g) toasted hazelnuts, chopped

Directions

In a large bowl, combine the carrots and grapes.
In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, vinegar, honey, shallot, mustard, coriander, salt, and pepper.
Pour three-quarters of the dressing over carrot mixture and toss to coat.
Arrange the carrot mixture on a platter. Top with hazelnuts, parsley, mint, and ricotta salata. Spoon the remaining dressing over everything and serve.
